Statement of intent

Ever since before I started high school in 2014, I wanted to become an actor.

Around two years ago, after having used a professional camera for a full month, taking at least a few hundred photographs to a few thousand photographs per day and editing them weekly, I have realised that I also enjoy being behind the camera and thought that it would be awesome to be able to act in a film and to also edit it and add special effects of my own or at least add something to the film.

Below is some of my work.

There are two persons that inspired me to start taking photographs and that have taught me how to do it through their YouTube channels.

Peter McKinnon

Canadian photographer and filmmaker.

Peter first was an entertainer. He was performing magic to be more specific.

But after some time he realised that he likes taking photographs with a camera that has been gifted to him and now he is one of the best photographers in the world.

His YouTube channel has taught me a lot about how cameras work, how to take good angles, how to edit photographs and a lot of cool useful tips and tricks for photography or for cinematography when you don't have the equipment necessary to take professional shots.

Sorelle Amore

Australian photographer, artist, fashion model.

Sorelle has moved 5 years ago to Iceland and started her journey as a photographer.

She invented her own selfie technique, that a lot of persons are actually implementing today, called 'Advanced selfie'.

Although I do not like taking selfies and I am still not good at taking them, her tips to taking photographs have  helped me a lot.

Our protagonist wakes up in a horrifying reality. All his family, friends and the whole world has been wiped out by giant humanoid creatures. He is the last survivor and as he is trying to run away from three giants, just about as one of them almost catches him, he realises he is not helpless. He faces the giant and throws a punch at the giant, blocking its palm. Nothing happens at first, but as the kid starts shouting, forceful waves of energy are being emitted rapidly from the ground through his fist. The giant is being thrown away a few hundred metres away from the kid. The other two giants are shocked and infuriated. They are rushing to the kid, but he has already mastered this power and throws them away with his punches as well.

He is delighted with his powers and decides to eradicate all the giants from his world.

Assignment 1

For our assignment, we had to create a photographic storyboard using our acquired knowledge from our sessions.

For my photographic storyboard at first I thought I might do a story of an object, a longboard and it's journey. But then I had other ideas come to mind and I have managed to put a person in the story as well and ended up doing a photographic storyboard about a girl who was getting bored outside and all of a sudden two objects that seem to have a mind of their own appear.

The star of our show is my 12 year old cousin, Sonia.

I have taken Close-up shots, an Extreme Long shot and Long shots as well.

All the photographs were taken on my phone, so excuse the poor quality of the images.

The fact that I have written down before hand all of the shots that I wanted to have portrayed helped me a lot in taking the photographs.

Unfortunately it has gotten too dark outside by the time I wanted to shoot the last frame, so no picture of the river.

Favourite artists and inspiration

My favourite artists are the ones that are working for the Japan anime studio Wit Studio, founded by George Wanda back in 2012 and the freelancer that they have hired during the years they have worked on the series 'Attack on Titan' to help them out with the God Tier animation, Arifumi Imai.

In the video below, the commentator does an astonishing job at describing the work process that Arifumi Imai went through when creating one of the best, most stunning scenes of Attack on Titan, Captain Levi vs Beast Titan. He usually works on these types of scenes at around six months for a few minutes of absolute beautiful epicness.

WARNING: IF YOU HAVE PHOTO SENSITIVE EPILEPSY YOU MIGHT WANT TO LOWER THE SCREEN LIGHT AT MINUTE 8:00

The God Tier animation combined with the God Tier original soundtracks and the story line, written by Hajime Isayama has produced an absolute masterpiece of a show.

Although I am not really into animation or drawing, these people make me think that I might want to try to animate something or at least learn how to draw at a decent level.

Notan drawing

The 12 Principles of Animation

1. Squash and stretch

This action gives the illusion of weight and volume to a character as it moves.

2. Anticipation

Prepares the audience for a major action the character is about to perform.

3. Staging

It's a presentation of an idea so that it is clear.

4. Straight Ahead & Pose to Pose

Pose to pose draws the key actions and then fills in the rest, whereas Straight Ahead is a continuous series of drawings.

5. Follow through and Overlapping

When the main body of the character stops, all other parts continue to catch up to the main part, nothing stops all at once.

6. Slow In and Slow Out

As the action starts, there are more drawings in the beggining, a few in the middle and more in the end. The fewer drawings, the faster the action. The more drawings, the slower the action.

7. Arcs

All actions, with few exceptions, follow a slightly circular path . Arcs give animation a more natural action and better flow.

8. Secondary Action

It's an additional action in the scene used as a supplement of the main one.

9. Timing

More drawings between poses slow and smooth the action. Fewer drawings make the action faster and crisper.

Timing mantains the appearence of an object abiding by the law of phisics.

10. Exaggeration

The animation remains true to reality, only it's presented in a wilder, more extreme form.

11. Solid Drawings

It's taking into account forms in three dimensional space, giving them volume and weight.

12. Appeal

It's a  quality of charm, able to please the viewer's eyes. It's the charisma of the action.

2nd Assignment

For my final assignment I first decided to try and create a notan style fight animation,  but it was a little bit difficult for me to create moving notan figures, so in the end I have hand drawn my characters.

Below are images of before and after a little bit of editing of the original drawings.

I used the show Attack on Titan as inspiration.

I created this video in After Effects, using alongside it Photoshop to create layers I could move the drawings with in After Effects.

This is my final video.

The Fight for Humanity’s Survival. One monster is trying to destroy humanity and the other is defending it.
